The artist expedition Sound Development City took place from 2012 until 2016 in annually changing cities. A total of sixty artists from twenty-seven countries participated in the five editions of this residency format, where they worked on individual projects in a wide range of artistic fields. The annual expedition group was made up of around a dozen artists, an expedition writer and the team.

The Sound Development City website is a multi-voiced logbook by channelling content from various authors and sources: texts, sketches, snippets, photos, sound pieces, radio interviews and videos added up to become a collective expedition diary. Additionally, each edition was documented based on the collected content in annual publications, that are available here.

Sound Development City was initiated and funded by Sound Development. The residency project was developed and produced by Heller Enterprises, a Swiss agency for cultural projects.

About the Project

Sound Development City gave artists time – time for processes to develop, for experimentation, for taking new paths – but also time to go astray, to detect and discover the unexpected.

From 2012 until 2016, Sound Development City organized a three-week expedition to two annually changing cities in late summer. Around a dozen selected artists working on individual projects were part of the expedition group. They were selected through an open call for projects that was geared towards artists working in all disciplines and from all over the world. The jury process aimed towards finding applications that built on a process-oriented approach, curiosity and an explorative mindset.

Sound Development City was an adventure, a place for experimentation, and a research lab, and it offered a productive environment for exchange and collaboration. The artist expedition set off into foreign urban and cultural spaces, in order to strike new paths and break new ground. Here, work theses could be examined, new project ideas or forms of expression could be tried out and bold visions could be put into practice.
The expedition format itself was meant both as practical instruction, as well as a metaphor. Sound Development City was a studio on the road, but also an inward journey to personal thought and work patterns, which were challenged through the experience of the unknown and the unpredictable, and could even be re-aligned by it.
The expedition cities served as urban resonance chambers, as working material, inspiration and playground for public presentations.

Sound Development City was initiated by the private and non-commercial cultural initiative Sound Development in 2012 and was developed in collaboration with Heller Enterprises, an agency for cultural projects. The project is financed by Sound Development and organized by Heller Enterprises.

After five inspiring, challenging and successful artist, the residency project Sound Development City came to an end. Sound Development decided to cease its operations per the end of March 2017. This marks the end of a mutually enriching common journey.

About Sound Development

Sound Development was an independent and privately funded platform which had been launched by Nia Schmidheiny in 2002. Through the experimental format of Sound Development City, Sound Development aimed to give artists the opportunity to realize trans-disciplinary projects. For Sound Development, personal encounters and collaborative work played a key role in developing new ideas – away from academic or institutional settings, Sound Development offered open space to let the unexpected happen and encourage a “culture in the open”.

The engagement was based on the following guidelines:

— «Sound Development connects and supports unconventional people and ideas.»
— «Sound Development sounds out new interfaces between philosophy and art.»
— «Sound Development produces and supports cultural projects in the open.»
